SEARAC Statement on Fresno Mass Shooting

SEARAC sends its heartfelt condolences to the families of those impacted by a mass shooting in Fresno, CA, on Sunday. This tragedy, which occurred just days after a school shooting in Santa Clarita, CA, is yet another example of how gun violence is an epidemic that our country can no longer ignore. The passage of common sense gun laws is long overdue.

We also denounce the irresponsible language that media are using to report this horrific act. From reports emphasizing the creation of a task force to investigate Southeast Asian gang activity – when there is no indication that this shooting was gang-related – to CNN’s labeling of the tragedy as an “American milestone” for the Hmong community, these word choices stereotype those involved and paint the SEAA community as perpetual foreigners. The language also inflicts even more pain on the families and community. Media must do better.

Our partner Hmong Innovating Politics will be offering healing spaces for the local community. Please read its statement for more information.
