IV. Grants
- (DC-Metro)
The Gannett Foundation
The Gannett Foundation, a corporate foundation sponsored by Gannett Co.,
Inc., serves local organizations in those communities in which Gannett has
a local daily newspaper or television station.
The foundation's priorities for the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area
include adjunct grassroots educational programs (i.e., afterschool tutorial
programs); at-risk youth; indigent healthcare; families in crisis; and
services for special populations (i.e., homeless children, poor/ill elderly).
The foundation's Washington service areas are Alexandria, Falls Church, and
Arlington, and the counties of Fairfax, Prince William, and Loudoun,
Virginia; Montgomery and Prince George's counties, Maryland; and the
District of Columbia. The average grant amount is $4,000 to $6,000.
The foundation prefers program support over general support, especially for
organizations with operating budgets of $1 million or more. The foundation
generally does not consider funding for capital campaigns; events,
conferences, seminars, debates, competitions, or similar short-term
projects; arts organizations or arts-related education projects; colleges
or universities; hospital-based programs; public policy or social research
organizations; or HIV/AIDS prevention and service organizations (the
foundation already contributes to the Washington Community AIDS Partnership).
In addition, the foundation does not fund individuals or organizations not
determined by the IRS to be tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3), nor does it
generally approve consecutive-year grants to an organization.
Deadline: August 15, 2004
- (National)
The Webb Foundation
The Webb Foundation has partnered with the San Jose-based Sony Training
Institute to offer Professional Development Scholarship Grants. The program
is one of several Webb Foundation initiatives serving the foundation's
mission to help others understand, apply, and manage the power of
electronic communications media in a positive and productive manner.
A total of eight scholarships covering tuition at a three-day Sony Training
Institute seminar will be awarded. Recipients are responsible for all other
expenses, including travel and accommodations.
Qualified candidates are required to have at least five years' professional
experience in electronic communications media and to have performed in an
industry or association leadership role. In addition, candidates must be
able to articulate the expected benefits of the training received and to
participate in designated follow-up activities after attending the seminars.
Applications are available online or by fax. For additional information,
visit the foundation's Web site.
Deadline: September 17, 2004
- (National)
J.M. Kaplan Fund
A program of the J.M. Kaplan Fund, the Furthermore program provides grants
to support nonfiction books on art, architecture, and design; conservation;
cultural history; and public issues.
The program seeks work that appeals to an informed general audience; gives
evidence of high standards in editing, design, and production; promises a
reasonable shelf life; and might not otherwise achieve top quality or even
come into being. Book proposals to which a university press or trade
publisher is already committed and for which there is a feasible
distribution plan are usually preferred.
Furthermore applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations. Successful
applicants have included civic and academic institutions, museums,
independent and university presses, and professional societies. Trade
publishers and public agencies may apply for Furthermore grants in
partnership with an eligible nonprofit project sponsor. Applications from
individuals cannot be accepted.
Grants will range from $500 to approximately $15,000, and may be used to
fund writing, research, editing, design, indexing, photography,
illustration, and printing and binding.
Deadline: September 15, 2004
