Extraordinary Southeast Asian American Leaders Honored at Annual Reception
Washington, DCThe Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC) will celebrate Southeast Asian American community leaders at our annual reception on Monday, July 23, 2007 at the Marvin Center on the campus of George Washington University. This year’s reception, entitled “A Decade of Strong Leadership” will feature Congressman Keith Ellison (MN-5) who will speak about leadership within diverse communities. As a strong leader on human rights and equality, Congressman Ellison will provide unique insight into the necessity of community leadership. SEARAC is also pleased to feature Touger Xiong, a cultural comedian and artist who has performed around the country, including in Washington, DC during World Refugee Day.
During the reception, SEARAC will honor two Southeast Asian American organizations, the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia (CAGP) and International Children Assistance Network (ICAN), for their community leadership and commitment to advocating for social change.
“I am proud and honored to be a part of SEARAC's celebration of extraordinary community leaders. Our communities are stronger, healthier and more vibrant because of the work of ordinary citizens exercising extraordinary leadership. SEARAC is to be commended for planting the seeds, and cultivating the fields so that we may reap the harvest of extraordinary leaders working for a more peaceful world.” Congressman Keith Ellison
“Both award recipients exemplify a long standing commitment to social change by utilizing civic engagement to better the lives of Southeast Asian refugee communities. We are very proud of their success and continued commitment to supporting underserved communities,” says SEARAC’s Executive Director, Doua Thor.
“A Decade of Strong Leadership” will be held in tandem with SEARAC’s annual Leadership-Advocacy Training which marks its 10th anniversary this summer. Starting this weekend, coming from all over the country including, Minnesota, California, Massachusetts, Hawaii, and Georgia, over 130 participants will gather to engage in continued leadership training.
