These mermaids were sewn by Seng V. Lo and a group of twelve Hmong-American women she works with at the Hmong/American Friendship Association, Inc., of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Ms. Lo's group includes both elderly and younger women who meet twice a week. Many of the elderly members appreciate the chance to have fun with one another rather than sitting around the house, and all of the members have the opportunity to make a little money by selling their work. The group makes mermaids and other dolls because children like them.
