Max Niedzwiecki, SEARAC's Executive Director, purchased this Hmong batik in the Panat Nikhom Refugee Processing Center in Chonburi, Thailand, in 1988. He was at Panat Nikhom as a volunteer as part of his study with the School for International Training's College Semester Abroad Program, and it was at this time that he first began working with refugees. The piece measures approximately four feet by five feet, and was made by applying wax to the cloth to make the design, then soaking the cloth in indigo dye, and then removing the wax. Its people and animals rushing in one direction reminded Max of Hmong refugees fleeing Laos.
