Voices From the Community
Why is it important to support Southeast
Asian American mutual assistance associations
(MAAs) and religious organizations
that provide social services?
We know the population we serve better than anybody
else because we serve our own people. We came
to America as refugees, too.
Megan Bui
Southeast Asian Community Center
San Jose, California
You don't have to go through the process of paperwork
to get social services at our organizations. If
they can provide services for you, they do it right
away.
Khouan Maoxomphu
Khmer Buddhist Society, Inc.
Greensboro, North Carolina
The Cambodian Buddhist temple is not only a place
of worship, but also a Cambodian community center
were social services are provided, where Cambodian
culture is conserved, and where all kinds of training
are implemented. It is a starting place to reach out
to Cambodian Americans.
Sovan Tun, Ph.D.
Cambodian Buddhist Society, Inc.
Silver Spring, Maryland
We provide unlimited services to the community at
large. We're always here for them.
Chaxiong Lo
Wausau Area Hmong Mutual Association
Wausau, Wisconsin
Our groups need to continue to provide services.
Now we can work with youth and the elderly community
members, and before this they didn't have an
organization. We provide services to people regardless
of race or ethnicity, and we can help with the
language barrier.
Rev. Y Hin Nie
United Montagnard Christian Church
Greensboro, North Carolina
In addition to providing culturally and linguistically
appropriate services to many Cambodian refugees
and immigrants, our organizations serve as the focal
point for preserving and perpetuating the unique
Cambodian arts and cultural heritage across the
U.S.A. They continuously unite Cambodians from
all walks of life for a sustainable integration into the
diverse American society.
Natalie Chhuan
United Cambodian American Resources for Enrichment, Inc. (UCARE)
Rockville, MD
MAAs provide services to the communities. They are
like gatekeepers. They open up doors for newcomers.
