National Southeast Asian American MAAs
National MAAs that often work with SEARAC include the
Cambodian American National Council (CANC), Hmong National
Development, Inc. (HND), the Laotian American National Alliance
(LANA), the National Alliance of Vietnamese American Service
Agencies (NAVASA) and the National Association for the Education
and Advancement of Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese
Americans (NAFEA). All of these organizations work to strengthen
local-level, grassroots organizations.
The Cambodian American National Council (CANC) is a coalition
of Cambodian-American individuals and organizations who work
together to build the lives of Cambodian people. Established in
1988, CANC is a US-based, grassroots, nonprofit organization dedicated
to promoting and fostering the sustainable development,
growth, and prosperity of the Cambodian community in the U.S.
and abroad, as well as the professional and leadership development
of all Cambodian individuals and organizations.

Hmong National Development, Inc. (HND) is the only Hmong
American national nonprofit organization in Washington, DC.
HND's mission is "developing capacity to ensure the full participation
of Hmong in society." As such, HND works locally and nationally
with private and public entities as well as individuals to pro-

mote educational opportunities, to increase community capacity,
and to develop resources for the well being, growth, and full participation
of Hmong Americans. In addition, HND serves as a
resource for decision makers, federal agencies, local and national
nonprofit organizations, and the community, providing information
about the status and needs of Hmong Americans.

The Laotian American National Alliance (LANA) is a national
nonprofit organization managed by and for Americans from Laos.
LANA's mission is to mobilize Laotian Americans to promote
social and economic advancement through civic participation and
public policy advocacy.

The National Alliance of Vietnamese American Service Agencies
(NAVASA) is a national nonprofit organization currently comprised
of 37 ethnic community-based organizations (CBOs) and faithbased
organizations. Since its incorporation in 1995, NAVASA has
promoted the economic, social, educational, cultural, civic, political,
and physical development of the Vietnamese American and
other ethnic populations in the United States. NAVASA, through
provisions of technical assistance, resources, and a collective voice

is committed to assisting its affiliates address the needs facing community
members in their specific localities.

The National Association for the Education and Advancement of
Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese Americans (NAFEA) is a
nonprofit organization serving professionals who are Southeast
Asians, or who work with the Southeast Asian community in the
fields of education, social services, and community development.
NAFEA's mission is to promote and support the advancement of
Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese Americans through education,
advocacy, networking, and cross-cultural exchange.

The Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC) is a national
nonprofit organization advancing the interests of Americans
with heritage in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam through advocacy,
capacity-building for organizations and leaders, and action-oriented
research and publication. SEARAC now provides funding, training,
and technical assistance to eighteen MAAs and FBOs throughout
the nation; seeks to represent its communities' concerns in
Washington, DC; and carries out trainings in leadership development,
advocacy, and other topics. SEARAC was founded in 1979 as
the Indochina Refugee Action Center (IRAC) to guard the human
rights of Southeast Asian refugees entering the U.S., and to foster
the development of nonprofit organizations led by and for
Southeast Asian Americans. SEARAC has led the creation of several
other national organizations led by and for constituents and
other Asian and Pacific Islander Americans. Most recently, SEARAC
helped create the Asian and Pacific Islander American Scholarship
Fund (APIASF).
