Background Information

Misconceptions continue to persist regarding Asian and Pacific Islander Americans in higher education, especially regarding their academic achievement or fields of study. Misrepresentations can have serious consequences for Asian and Pacific Islander Americans, as they are often excluded as an under- represented minority group in higher education or are not recognized as a group encompassing many subpopulations that each have specific needs.

Out of concerns about the ramifications of such misperceptions, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus held a forum on January 21, 2000. In discussing the treatment of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans by federal officials, universities, colleges, and institutions charged with effecting policy in higher education, panelists agreed that general misconceptions about Asian and Pacific Islander Americans ignore the diversity that exists within the community.

Such diversity is illustrated by the different educational needs of the various subpopulations. Groups such as Pacific Islanders and Southeast Asian Americans have not achieved the academic success as other groups within the Asian and Pacific Islander American community. Apart from dismal social statistics which are comparable if not worse than other groups, these communities are under represented in higher education.

The organizers of the summit would like to continue this discussion with a focus on the status of Pacific Islander and Southeast Asian Americans in higher education. A coordinating committee consisting of Asian and Pacific Islander American scholars has been established to provide guidance on the planning and coordination of the summit, which will be held on May 18, 2001.
