Tens of thousands of Southeast Asians left their homes in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam as refugees. Painful memories of their traumatic journeys were transformed by the new promise of life in America. Families emerged from severe hardship to rebuild their lost communities amidst the possibilities and disappointments of their new home. The stories, varied and vivid, are ready to be told.

This 12-minute video presentation explores the memories of the journeys by Southeast Asians to the U.S., and their subsequent resettlement in American society. It places the refugees' struggles into historical perspective by weaving photographs and symbolic articles and events in a graphic timeline. The video was crafted from a wide variety of materials, including still photographs, home video, file footage from news and international organizations, newspaper clippings, cloths and other artwork, traditional music, and computer graphics. The images are cross-faded with sound and music and woven with voices of Southeast Asians to tell poignant stories of the journey, settlement, and hopes for the future — a beautiful composite of the refugee experience. SEARAC premiered "Bridges" at its "Thank You, America" Gala on Sunday, November 8, 1998 in Washington, DC.

The video was produced by SPARK Media of Washington, DC. The video is available from SEARAC at $24.95 per copy and $2.50 for shipping and handling. An order form is available, or call 202-667-4690 to place your order.
